I voted for Zack's death because of the fact - for me it was so heart-wrenching. The fact that he had tried so hard and had always wished to become a SOLDIER 1st Class - and had eventually reached that status, although having met numerable obstacles in his way; the fact that his mentor and close friend had turned his back on him after literally drumming "never forget your pride as a SOLDIER.........Hold onto your dreams...." into his head, and yet despite it all; Angeal had still turned his back on his student. Zack was forced to track down his mentor's best friend, and even had to face his mentor - a battle that he fought in conflict with his inner wishes, and eventually reigned victorious in....which dealt him an even lower blow with the knowing that the man that had literally taken him under his wing, looked out for him, cared for him, protected him and taught him; Angeal Hewley, was dead - and by his doing. Over-coming his grief - Zack was then forced to understand that Aerith, his girlfriend, was being watched; due to her being the last Ancient living......
Then Nibelheim came, and we all know what transpired there........four years of being used as a test subject then passed before Zack managed to reclaim his freedom and run; taking his best friend with him.........but; despite all his efforts and battles; Zack Fair fell, just outside of Midgar, upon a bluff that even permitted him to see the church his girlfriend and him had spent time in - almost as if teasing him as he drew his last breath.......

FFVII would never have happened in its entirety had it not been for Zack. He overcame a hell of a lot, and he'll always be one of my fave characters because of his spirit and determination.
SaI, I definitely agree that Hojo could've turned his genius toward good and changed the world for the better, but if he still worked for Shinra, then his research could still have evil implications even if that was never his intention. ^_^

Although I don't think Zack's death was as tragic as a lot of people believe, he still has become one of my favorite characters (he's probably my second favorite). I have Crisis Core and I'm starting to love him even more. I still am far from finishing the game, so maybe once I beat it, the death might be more heartbreaking for me. However, in the meantime, I don't feel too much toward his death. In fact, I don't feel much toward many characters' deaths, especially if other characters went through more (this isn't suppose to be directed at Zack).

I chose Zack's death, hands down.
I never was able to finish the original FFVII, (I got to the area RIGHT before Aeris' death before my memory card was stolen.) so I never really got to know Aeris as much as I did Zack. This may be slightly biased because I recently played and defeated Crisis Core, -- and sobbed my eyes out, thank you very much -- but even so, when I stole FFVII from my brother (It's actually his copy, but he never plays it, let alone think about unless I ask to play it.) and started replaying it, I realized that I really don't like Aeris that much anyway. So, when Zack died, it crushed me because he was always so optimistic and hyperactive, and just wanted to help. He could have left Cloud behind and continued on, but he didn't. And that just really got to me.
I'm really out of it, so I apologize if this doesn't make much sense.

Zack could have survived-- which is the most heartbreaking part about the entire thing. But, he was too much of a friend to leave Cloud behind and he was comatose with no assurance that he would even survive. But... he didn't leave Cloud and dragged him around the entire world just to keep him safe. Then, right before they got to their destination... dead.
If it hadn't been for Zack, the entire world would have ended. And he never got to see how he became a hero. Everything about him was essentially stolen away, even though it wasn't Cloud's fault, and his personality, that trace of him inside of Cloud fought on. I don't think Cloud would have survived if it hadn't been for Zack.
*sniffle*
Even the thought of Zack dying breaks my bubble of fluffy happiness and I break.

I agree completely and utterly. And I feel your pain.

My b*****d PSP is currently recharging so that I can try again to complete this b*****d mission I'm stuck on... GRR.......
Kysic, I don't think anyone in FFVII's timeline has been through more heartbreak than Zack has, he's just too stubborn and determined to let it get hm down. That's part of the reason it is such a tragedy that he died.

Kysic, I don't think anyone in FFVII's timeline has been through more heartbreak than Zack has, he's just too stubborn and determined to let it get hm down. That's part of the reason it is such a tragedy that he died. First off, that's a matter of opinion. Certain tragedies might have more impact on other people than others. I also added that the last sentence wasn't directed at Zack. However, I think seen a few characters in other fandoms die worse deaths than Zack, but I mostly read about his death, not seen it yet. I would say further why I didn't feel as sad over it as some other people, but I want to finish Crisis Core before I say anything. I might change my mind later while playing the game, or may need to check some facts. Even though I don't think Zack's death was the saddest, it still was pretty heartwarming, and I haven't even seen the Crisis Core version of him dying (I'm trying to avoid spoilers). In fact, ever since I played Crisis Core, he got booted up on my favorite FFVII character list. He started off as I character I liked a little up to being my second favorite! The strange thing is that even when a character's death might affect me, I usually get mad over the death instead of sad. Even when a few of my favorite characters were killed in a videogame/movie/anime, I usually feel more mad or heartwarmed than depressed.

I really do feel pain for all the tragedy's that has happened in FFVII but I think the one that hit me the hardest was Zack's death. He was such a sweet and caring person. No one deserves to die, especially someone like him. It hurt me to see Cloud so upset about it and the ending scene of Crisis Core makes it that much more painful. I really do miss Zack. T_T

Geostigma.
It's cancer, people. There were only two people in Advent Children who we actually got to see with it, but it's got all the symptoms of leukemia in particular besides the... melty rash bit. Denzel seemed pretty fatigued and sickly pale; not to mention Vincent described it as one's own blood cells going haywire and attacking themselves; it was caused by something that the victims couldn't see; and there was no cure until the last ten minutes of the movie. Not to mention that needed some assistance from beyond.
There are enough parallels to make Geostigma hit eerily close to home, if you've come across cancer personally in any way. I'm sure that the only reason I drew these parallels on my own was because one of my teachers told us about how a family member of his had died from cancer years ago, and I recognized the symptoms while I was watching Advent Children. I mean, I felt bad for cancer victims already, but when it cropped up in my favorite video game movie sequel it made me terribly uncomfortable. Whenever I watch Advent Children I have to really focus hard on the fact that "it's just a movie, it's just a movie."
It's morbid, but that's why I picked Geostigma.

Zack was awesome and all, at least I assume (*doesn't have a PSP and REALLY REALLY REALLY NEEDS TO GET ONE*), but as far as "greatest" tragedy? I don't think the death of one person counts for that.
I picked the plate drop on Sector 7. I mean, Midgar was heavily populated, right? That had to have killed thousands of people, and think of how many others had loved ones who died, etc. As much as we personally thought Zack's death was sad and it was a loss of a really awesome character, I don't think it's the "Greatest" tragedy, and I'm not just measuring that by body count. Those people never even had a chance. With the push of a button, hundreds or thousands of helpless lives were snuffed out like a candle.

The Sector 7 plate is one of the biggest tragedies, I do agree with Pen. I remember the scene of the news anchor, looking up when it fell - imagine that in the upgraded graphics. People looking up in horror as Reno pushes the button, houses falling apart and people being crushed. It would be terrifying to watch.
That being said, I voted for Aeris. LOL.

Tragedy--the downfall and rebound of spectacular people bearing a moral weakness or fatal flaw--doesn't apply to nearly half of the choices. I chose human experimentation since the concept of considering other people to be fair game at best is the reason why any of these tragedies exist in the first place.
Reno would probably agree with me too: he may have pushed the button, but only because he is considered a professional in a very painful game, and if he doesn't perform to the letter, then he might get killed or someone else is put in the line of fire... or both.
The planet wasn't in as much trouble as humans troubled themselves and each other. Perhaps that is why humanity is miniscule in the cosmic scheme... it can't see past itself. That, in itself, is tragic.

I voted Zack's death. I cried my eyes out in the ending of Crisis Core. Although Aeris' death was also very tragic and sudden (i had to pause the game to get tissues before geting back to battle jenova!), Zack's death had a much stronger emotional impact on me. Aeris' death made me cry, and i was sad for a short time, whereas Zack's death was to protect Cloud... umm i dont think i'm making much sense here, but maybe it was because in crisis core, when Angeal died, the same tune was playing when Zack died. It was also raining... (both deaths in CC) and this just made the whole thing much more tragic. Also the things they say about pride and honour and being a hero + Cloud's scream. It was epic. I'll never forget it. I started crying because of that bit!! But then again, I also cried when Aeris died and fell into Cloud's arms and he was all sad and angry at Sephiroth... so I guess... add Cloud into the mix and it makes things more tragic The Nibelheim incident got me teary.. but I wasnt crying yet.. same as the human experimentation. It is just so cruel!

From the list? Zack's death, but everything I could say about it has already been said, but it wasn't the main tear-jerker for me.
That was the Cosmo Canyon scene where Red found out the truth about his father and the tears from the statue...
