I've never played blitzball in my LIFE (X version, that is) I got my brother to play the blitz game on my file. I much preferred the card games, although I liked the idea of what square were trying to do with Blitzball.
On the other hand, sphere break is AWESOME. I rocked sphere break.

I SUCKED at sphere break. I could not get it at all. I was better at blitzball, though I hated it just the same.

I did too at first, Mint, but I knew that I would get the lady luck dressphere if I won, so I spent HOURS learning how to pwn hard at that game. I finally beat Shinra at like 2am. Funny thing? I don't use Lady Luck that much Although I use it more than some of my other X-2 spheres. It was fun when I got into it though ;D X is my big obession game, so I've managed to, uh, complete the sphere grid for a few people now. It's simply a case of owning battle arena fiends to hoard good spheres to replace the empty nodes to max my stats to beat the dark aeons although I am NOT GETTING KIMAHRI'S CELESTIAL WEAPON GODDAMIT. NO! On X I tend to use Tidus, Auron, Rikku/Lulu/Yuna, Wakka and Kimarhi, in that order of usefulness. I use aeons as blast absorbers, but that is IT. I barely ever use Wakka and Kimarhi, and the girls all tend to swap around for slightly different things (Yuna for casting/holy, Lulu for magics and Rikku for general badass.) Tidus and Auron tank. How does everyone else use or not the characters in this game?

Tend to go Rikku/Auron/Yuna with black mage spells as well (higher magical attack stat than Lulu)

Hubby would always run Tidus through Auron's sphere grid and vice versa. Yuna would go through Lulu's and again, vice versa. He'd put Kimahri through Lulu's too, even though he rarely used Kimahri. His main team was Tidus, Auron, or Yuna/Lulu. He kicked some tail with them too.

FFX is my favorite.
The dream team is Tidus, Auron, and Wakka, for one reason: Overdrives and First Strike. At the endgame, when everyone is maxed out, what do you have for Overdrives? Yuna's, Lulu's, and Kimahri's are all crap. Rikku's is interesting, but not that useful. Whereas you have Blitz Ace, which is 99999x8, Attack Reels, which is 99999x12, and Banishing Blade, which is all four Breaks at once plus Auron's Celestial has First Strike.
Not to mention Auron is the damn coolest character in the game.
As for actual progression through the storyline, I use every character in their intended role except for Kimahri and Rikku - I don't use Kimahri because all he's good for is doing something somebody else can do better, and Rikku is only good for Steal, which goes counter to my strategy of destroying everything before it gets a turn off.
I also powerlevel like mad through the main game, but without ever stopping to grind. How? Just win the Blitzball tournament vs. the Goers (irritating, yes, but doable) and get the Strength sphere for that, and find the Magic sphere in the chest in Luca. Give the Strength sphere to Auron and the Magic sphere to Lulu. They begin Overkilling everything they so much as sneeze at, building up a lot of extra AP. Everyone levels faster and quickly begins Overkilling everything THEY sneeze at, which builds up even more AP, which makes everyone level even faster. By the time I got to Yunalesca on my last playthrough, I had Tidus and Wakka halfway through Auron's grid, he was halfway through Tidus's, Yuna knew Holy, and Lulu knew Flare and was sitting next to Doublecast waiting for enough Level 3 Lock Spheres. Simple and easy.

Sphere Break. It sucked. End of discussion.
In other news: Tidus, Wakka, Auron are the dream team for difficult baddies. But I can't really say they were my norm. I differentiated sometimes... Okay, that's a lie, I used them ALL THE TIME. xD
Ahem.
I made good use of Lulu, Yuna (those aeons were deadly useful, y'know :B), and Rikku, but Kimarhi...well, he sucked. I generally ignored the wikkle Ronso wuss.

Auron, Wakka, and Tidus were great all around. I used Lulu more towards the beginning of the game, but not towards the end because her spells got weaker - that was probably neglect on my part, though. Yuna isn't much of a fighter, so I mainly used her for aeons and healing. Kimahri is alright, and his ability to absorb enemy fight skills can be useful once in a while, but I never favored him much either.
My dream team was actually Rikku, Auron, and Wakka/Tidus (I switched between them a lot). Instead of putting Rikku on a magic track, I put her on Auron's to see what would happen, haha. =P She actually gets pretty strong (and I love seeing the girls dishing out the major damage points), and I love stealing things - I always end up over-spending so I never have any funds. That was a bit of a mistake on my part, though, I was never very big on magic because I went for more physical attacks against enemies. I depended on character switching too much whenever I needed magic (I loved that ability, though. I always loved when a character is KOed but they get up to run away when an aeon comes, too. xD So funny).
...I am getting the STRONGEST urge to finish my game of X first. I stopped at Yunalesca and never kept going, and I'm seriously in the mood to game for the next five hours. NO. MUST... WORK ON... HISTORY PROJECT...

Haha. The itch. You know you cannot resist.
I think the main reason I dropped Wakka like a hot potato was simply because I cba with Blitzball, and never got into it. To get his overdrives and celestials you have to play that game, so without them he basically fell behind for me. I used him quite a lot until I started powerlevelling (after I'd already completed the game and gone back to my last save to complete the goodies), but the blitzball thing just because a pain in the butt for me.
Almost as bad as that goddarn butterfly-catching game. Or the chocobo one. OH CHOCOBO RACE HOW I LOATHE THEE. I musta spent 10 hours trying to get under 0.
I stopped using Lulu a lot, then I gave her auto-haste and learned her doublecast, flare and ultima. LULU JUST LOVES CASTING ULTIMA AND DESTROYING STUFF.
That said, I did also make Tidus learn ultima too.... And his magic stats are actually higher than Lu's.
I think we can agree in the end that everyone loves a tank, therefore Tidus and Auron are favs. Wakka too, unless you can't do blitzball 'cause that gives him a cap.
I WILL learn how to play blitzball now. I learnt sphere break, so how hard can it be? That said I'm planning on replaying X at SOME point, but I'd be sadface to go back to noobish power levels and not my all-powerful hammer of destruction now.

aw fear, it has be done at some point.
A lot of people seemed to not get blitzball, but I loved it cuz I always won (That's odd since I hate sports in general, but that's another story.) Actually, blitzball only got on my nerves when I didn't feel like waiting around and gettin techniques, especially when you're lower-leveled in the tournaments, it's a pain!
My strategy is usually to stick with the original team (minus Datto) and pass and swim to the far left or right, depending on who's defending what side, of course the recipients of the ball hafta be high passers, but they always pass the ball to either Tidus (sphere/jecht shot) or Brother(venom shot).
Anywho, you guys are making me wanna dig out the old ps2 and play X again! I think I managed to get everyone's celestial weapons (except Kimarhi, damn butterflies!).

My strategy for Blitzball is to sink one goal, then move your guy behind your own goalie and go do something useful for the next two minutes. The AI is too dumb to look for you there.

LOL, Mengde. Just... lol. I'm totally trying that next time I play blitzball. Maybe then I can avoid painful situations where I score one goal and then the Guado Glories score three in quick succession.

Trust me, it works (in the North American release at least, though I doubt they fixed it for the PAL version). That's not my actual strategy, but it's what kept me sane when I was getting Wakka's World Champion.
1 championship (3 to 4 games) to get Attack Reels 1 league (10 games) to get the next league which offers Status Reels 1 league for Status Reels 1 championship for Auroch's Reels 2 leagues to finally get the league that offers Sigil/Crest/Whatever for his Celestial Weapon 1 league for unlocking key item thingy
So that's about 55-60 games I played.

If only I had known this. I never bother unlocking his Celestial Weapon because of all the damn games involved, although I'm not too bad at playing. I've found that just getting a good team makes playing so much easier. Who knew Brother was good at anything? My younger sister just asks our brother-in-law to play all the blitzball for her. cheater
