Was there ever a moment when you swore blind that Square Enix had no clue what they were doing? Perhaps a bad soundtrack or two? Lets face it; as good a game company as they are, SE make their mistakes! Take Genesis Rhapsodos' first english VA, or even the ever-changing VAs of Aerith Gainsborough ... who can possibly forget The Spirits With? So let us know what you thought were SE not so hot choices and rant about them a bit! ;D

I actually think SE is a pretty mediocre company, carried only on the strength of its core money-maker.
The entire Compilation, for example, is mostly a motley crew of good but not great titles. Dirge was horribly overhyped and horribly underwhelming, AC was likewise horribly overhyped and horribly underwhelming, and BC hasn't even been released here... or so I've come to believe. About the only truly quality title I've seen come from the Compilation has been Crisis Core, and even that one was great because it came almost completely from the original FFVII.
Squaresoft's status as an innovator and quality game maker seemed to take a plummet after it merged with Enix. After X, everything it produced seemed to be a rehash of everything else either it (FFXII) or another company (FFXI) had already created. It has made some good games after its merge, but none of those games seem to have the same sort of classic feeling that earlier Square games possess - FFVI, VII, and X (among the others), Xenogears, Parasite Eve, and even Bushido Blade.
Now, the only games Square seems to produce are RPGs. Granted, that may be its core foundation, but it has seemingly tossed aside all other endeavors. In the "good ol' days," there were even fringe games like Einhander and the aforementioned Bushido Blade. Both of those are hardly RPG games. The first is a side-scrolling shooter, and the second is an action game. I don't see SE making any of those games nowadays.
That said, as far as mistakes made, I'd say that The Bouncer for the PS2 was a pretty big flop. It wasn't bad, but it was far from great. And it was dang short.
As far as Spirits Within, I actually liked that movie. I can see why people disliked it - it's definitely not fantasy - but I thought it was a good movie nonetheless. Certainly, it was better than Advent Children.

Well, they've been a bit hit and miss with the compilation, but they hit all the right notes with Odin Sphere. Character development, music and storyline(s) are all done superbly.
I withold comment on The Spirits Within. I've only seen it once a couple of years ago and it didn't leave much of an impression.

I agree with Kaj on the only-RPG thing, even the new game "Last Remnant" was an RPG and from what I'm told it was a bit boring. That aside, was it just me who didn't like Yuna at all? Or the whole FFX-2? It was like a fanfic author regretting killing off a character and deciding to bring them back in via a round-about way. It more or less undermined FFX.

Hmm, yeah. I hated FFX-2 until I stopped taking it seriously. Of course it took away the emotional impact of FFX's ending, and a lot of the music drove me nuts, but on the other hand I appreciated some of the additional character development (Brother cracked me up). I miss Sakaguchi. And Nobuo never should have left... I miss his compositions SOOO badly! FFXII had okay music, but how much more epic and amazing would the soundtrack have been if Nobuo had done it? Another thing driving me nuts (after watching the newest trailers for FFXIII and Versus): the character designs! Really, how many more times are they going to recycle the Cloud look for the main characters?! They shouldn't feel like they need to rely on that and I really wish they'd move away from it. And the blonde girl (love interest for the Cloud-looking main guy?) in the Versus trailer seriously has Aeris' face. Like, they just took the exact rendering from AC and didn't try to change it. It's just ridiculous....

I'll never ever ever ever ever forgive Square Enix for giving the X Box a Final Fantasy game.
Money grabbing wh*res. Simple as.
But then, they're not famed for console or fan loyalty.

It all started going downhill the moment they merged with Enix. For example, anyone remember the original Valkyrie Profile? Blood amazing game-- even with the shoddy graphics, it was a classic. That was Enix. Anyone remember Vagrant Story? Classic Square. X-2? Square-Enix.
Both companies had their own flaws, but when you combined them, it just got worse. It was like... every single bad thing in the company crushed together. They've come out with some /okay/ games merged, but not one has held the same masterpiece skills.
*sobs* I miss when Square and Enix were different game companies.
Advent Children may have made a lot of people excited, and I won't deny that it was beautiful, but let's face it-- it was nothing more than a fan-boy's wet dream. There was no plot to speak of, or if there was a plot it was as riddled with holes as my favorite pair of socks. I won't deny that it was flashy, but it was in no way amazing. It didn't give a spark.
I'm holding out though. Crisis Core wasn't too bad, Kingdom Hearts was good, but not totally classic, and I'm hoping that the XIII, Versus, and their line of new games hold promise.
For some reason this ended up in the wrong thread... it was very odd.
EDIT: I lied. I have lost all faith in Square-Enix. They are lost to me. Mary Sues in the Kingdom Hearts games. Seriously: a 14th member who is angsty, dark past, needs to be dragged back, isn't willing to be a member, hunts after not only Riku, but Axel and Roxas? That's not even taking into account that she looks like a wannabe Kairi and can wield a special keyblade. I swear, you can go on ffn and look it up, and you'll get a thousand stories that sound exactly like that, only different names. It's the fangirl's wet dream. All faith is lost. The end is nigh.

@ Sai: Wannabe Kairi Org Member is actually one of Kairi's nobodies. She was the official nobody created when she lost her heart in the beginning of the first game. Namine was created when Sora releaed her heart from his own later on in Hollow Bastion (which is why she could manipulate his memories).
So yeah that could be why the new Org XIII chic looks like a Kairi wannabe.
I don't think it's a bad move. Could be tricky, but for KH it might actually work.

No, I think that's pretty much it for Kingdom Hearts.
Sai, link me to where you got that from, I'm woefully behind on what's going on in the Kingdom Hearts series.
But yes, that's it. An Organization, called Orginization XIII... but has 14 members, one of whom has special powers that even the one chosen by the keyblade will have trouble defeating?
...
And I actually really liked that series.
What about the rumors I heard that Disney were not a part of it? Is that lies or truth?

Ohhh, I hate to be the douche, but really... all that's left of the original XIII are like... none, if I'm right about it. So in all fairness, it's no problem that there's a new member, considering all the old members bit the dust. :/
That said, the whole complicating of the KH universe is what made me begin to severely dislike it. Heartless I could deal with. Nobodies started to push it. Nobodies that helped out Heartless and Nobodies that helped out people and Heartless that weren't so Heartless and Nobodies that were Somebodies and blah blah blah zZzZzZzZz...
Anyway.

This is before they all croaked.
But I get your reasons for not liking the whole idea of the games. It was quite... oddly dealt with. It's complicated, like putting a white puzzle together-- you don't even get something to help you on the way there.

I bought it for MSG4. \sarcasm The big problem with S.E. is because they are a Japan based company, and because Japan is big on RPG games, the majority of their games are... well RPGs. *blarg* These other game developers like Valve, Bethesda, Activision Blizzard, ect. are slaughtering them in game sales. Why? Because they are not trying to stick with one game genre, they're just putting out games that are different, innovative, and engaging. Everyone else has learned to branch out and step out of their comfort zones with their ideas. If SE had any sense left, they should step out too.
