I see to be moving further and further away from the land of Final Fantasy. Some of you (if you have me on alert/favourites, I know there are some of you here) have noticed that the only two FF fics I'm updating are wonders of a cheat device and Converging Streams which I'm co-authoring with Mystic. My main focus is on my two No More Hero's multichapter fics and my Brawl "episodic epic" Divided By Zero and there's a Zelda/Mario one in the pipelines.
Does anyone else feel this, that they seem to drift away from a fandom after being in it for so long?

I stay clamped onto fandoms like I have lockjaw. But I would like to move on a little. Just a little. E.g., I've been focusing on Metal Gear right now. Nothing epic but...messing.
And if not moving away FF itself, then at least FFVII. /sigh

Eh, I think it's only natural to drift away from a fandom every once in a while. People's interests change, after all; they discover new things, etc. A while ago I was seriously obsessed with Trinity Blood, but now I'm kinda... less. =P I still have a bunch of ideas for fics based on it, but when I'm not in obsessed!mode, I just can't seem to find the inspiration. Let me put it this way. Unless I live, eat and breathe a fandom, I find it hard to write stories for it.
Of course, there's a couple fandoms - well, one, really - that I keep coming back to: the Devil May Cry fandom. I don't know why, but I find it wonderfully, incredibly easy to write for it. That may have something to do with the fact that Dante and Vergil are just so d**n cool that all I need to do is see a picture and I go into obsessed!mode all over again. =P

I was heavily in ff9 earlier this year, but faded out after only a couple of fics. For me, it's not fandoms that I switch around in, it's pairings. Vincent/Tifa, Reno/Tifa, Vincent/Yuffie, Yuffie/Reeve ... it's all up in the air for me.
Speaking of Converging Streams, Maniac, writer's block. Never fun. I'll get it though. Promise!

I never completely move away from a fandom once I become interested. I may abandon it for a little bit while I'm busy obsessing over something else, but I'll always come back. For example, right now my limited ff reading time is directed at the Trigun fandom. I first got into ff with Harry Potter, and while for the last year I've been reading almost always FF7 stuff, I still go back now and then and read some HP (or House, or CSI, or Bones, or Artemis Fowl).
It's like an addiction I just can't shake. The cravings always come back.

Oh, what an interesting topic! I'm one of those that abandons fandoms unless I'm actively writing in them. So FF7 has been my baby for about a year, but before that it was Bartimeaus/Diana Wynne Jones/Spirited Away/Resident Evil. I just got an alert from a RE C2 the other day and I was like, "Oh yeah..." *delete* I tend not to venture into fandoms unless I already have ideas for fics, and sometimes not even then. Artemis Fowl, for example (is that fandom any good, YAC?). So I guess you could call me a serial monogamist. Although I think I'm in a serious relationship now.

I seem to go through cyclic periods. See, if I am attached enough to a fandom (like FFVII fics or Snape/Hermione in the HP fandom), I will lose interest for a few months, then come back to it, then lose interest, then come back to it. It's weird, but it's how I work. And then there are all these teeny weeny fandoms that I want to write fic for every once in a while.
(Like Beetlejuice and Jackie Chan Adventures XP)

Interesting topic of discussion...
Me, FFVII's sorta been my mainstay throughout... well, throughout my entire fanfiction tenure, I guess. I've gone off the beaten path a few times (the most significant one being Voices of a Distant Star, which was a lot of fun to write for... speaking of which, I'm also writing a short triplet for Shinkai's newest movie, 5 Centimeters Per Second, but I don't know where to post it. Woe is me), but I've always come back to FFVII for one reason or another. Mostly it's because my biggest project was started in FFVII, and it's still far from being finished. Maybe that's it.

Honestly...not really. xD There are a couple gems that hold true to Eoin's style and the characters, but all around it's a lot ofyounger authours, and the writing reflects that (not that young writers can't be good, of course, but generally speaking). I only read it if I get a really terrible craving for it, because otherwise I'm too lazy to go through tons of fics trying to find something approaching decent quality. It's also a smaller fandom - has around 3000 fics total I think - so there's less choice.

I've wandered completely out of fandoms. I mean, I started fanfiction when I was ten and writing it around the same time (oh, gawd, the horrors of a child's first writing), right at Yu Yu Hakusho. I sort of blame just having a short attention span as a kid, because after a few months I went to Teen Titans and then finally hit Naruto, which I was obsessed with until summer before this last one. That's when I met FFVII, and I think I'm really going to stick with it. The reason is mainly because it isn't continuous. It's over, and I think that was my big problem with all of the other fandoms I've been in; it's like you know what you're getting into before you get into it. I drift into others sometimes - Harry Potter, back to Naruto occasionally, TDI and B10 for kicks - but I'm pretty much sticking to FF. I'm haplessly in love with it.

Yeah, well, just wait another five years or so. Eventually, you'll start seeing FFVII-2... FFVII-3... FFVII: Last Crisis... FFVII: Last Crisis: Finale... FFVII: After Crisis... FFVII: Crisis Fantasy... FFVII: Final Crisis...
Because you KNOW they're going to milk this thing... and you KNOW that each successive story's going to be worse... and worse... and worse.
In a way, it reminds me of the .hack series, which is using more or less the exact same tactic - massive media, games spanning every system, OAVs and movies and series and more video games, and let's not forget merchandise, and especially those figurines, and ooh, then there's the cosplayers that'll be begging to get the real deal direct from Square, and... yeah.
Anyway, I'm actually feeling kinda glum because whenever I check for fanfiction, I find myself looking in the "Voices of a Distant Star" and "FFVII" fandoms only. VoDS never gets updated (only 8 stories, too, which is such a shame... or not), so I'm left with constantly poring through countless horribly-written stories dealing with Genesis BANGING DA CLOUD-CANDY or something like that, and I get even more depressed.
But maybe I'm just sort of getting out of the fanfiction scene in general. I mean, sure, I like writing fanfiction still, and I enjoy reading it, too, but... I'm just not as crazy about it as I was at the wee lil' age of 10. Then again, maybe that's just because of puberty and growing up and hearing my voice go LOOOOW and stuff. Blah.
And, uh... oh yeah. Um... actually, I'm sort of wondering if there's any extremely good Evangelion or Xenogears fics out there. Those two sit together atop my Favorite Stories of All Time, but I have yet to find any decent stories for them. (Well, Evangelion had EVA-R, but that's it.)
So any fans of those two have any suggestions? (Or maybe I should write a fanfic of my own. Hm... I dunno...)

^If you find any good Xenogears stuff, please tell me.
I'd actually always wanted to write XG stuff myself...or Xenosaga buuuuuuut I fear not doing it justice. Just like everything else. But Xenogears...hooo. That's one fandom I'm glad to be part of or follow, except for the CitanxSigurd junk. Eh.

Well, you all may be younger than me, but in fanfic years I'm just a baby. FFVII is my first and only, and I've only been into it for about a year now. So it's far too early for me to offer any meaningful data in response to this question.
Although, in terms of fandom, my roots are in The Lord of the Rings from the days when we geeks were anxiously awaiting the release of the movies. I wasn't into fic in those days, my interest was all in the books and in discussing the movie possibilities with other dorks of like mind. I did drift away from those forums after the movies and the special editions had all been released, but if I had my base in the fic of the fandom who knows? Maybe I'd still be hanging around. Or maybe not.
I am totally still friends with at least a dozen people I met in the fandom, though.
Oh, and kaj, maybe it's not so much that you're losing interest in fic and more that you've already gone through all of the good stuff and more isn't being produced. I've noticed a general dry spell that seems to be becoming more and more permanent as the weeks crawl by. Note the scarcity of nominees so far this year.

Maybe I haven't been into fanfiction for long enough for this to be an issue, I don't know. I started with FFVII and it's still my main interest. I've written a few things for other fandoms, but so far I've always gone back to FFVII.

Funny you should mention that, because that's how I feel, most of the time. Sometimes, the stories are just that... complete or full or massive or good or what have you that I just feel like I'm unfit to dabble in them. 3. Xenosaga... ehh... if only it'd lived up to its predecessor. 4. I'm sure there've been stuff like Fei/Bart, Fei/Citan, Fei/Billy, Billy/Jesse (incest, huzzah!), Citan/Jesse, Sigurd/Rico, and on and on and on. (But at least the Xenogears guys look like... actual guys. None of this metrosexual pretty-boy fad going on in the FFVII universe.) I'm just glad I haven't read any of them. And Vulcan, you might be right. It HAS been ten years or so now. I'm sure the river of ideas is running kinda thin nowadays.
