I just realised that we don't have a thread to discuss the sequel to FFX. So here's one: discuss FFX-2 here. Loved it? Hated it? It does seem to be one of the most hated Final Fantasy games - anyone up for defending it?
I don't like it that much, but there were still things I enjoyed. I thought the Dresspheres were cool and the faster pace of the battles made for a nice contrast with FFX. And some of the missions were fun.
The plot was flimsy though, and I didn't like what they did with the characters, especially Yuna. There weren't many new places to explore either, since they pretty much reused all the environments and monsters from FFX.

It was my first Final Fantasy game, as I asked for a final fantasy game for christmas and got that one. It's not bad, kind of like the game equivilant of chick lit. Quite fun, but not the greatest of plots. I'm still playing through though, so maybe that opinion will change, I don't know.

Final Fantasy X-2. Jeez, where to start? I think the people at square must have all been having seziures whe they designed it or something, because it's the biggest 'girl-power'fest I've ever seen. I mean, it's fun for a bit of light gaming (or if you're so bored your brain's dribbling out of your skull)- but seriously, someone else (in another thread here) said it looked like Yuna was having some sort of early midlife crisis, and I agree. Okay, so it at least looks like I'm not just ranting, I'll point out my main grievances. First, obviously, Yuna herself. In FFX we meet a slightly shy, innocent, sweet and gentle, but determined, Yuna. Great. She's a wonderful character who is willing to give up her very life for Spira. More than that, she actually has a personality. On the surface she's innocent to the point of being naive, but underneath lies an iron will, which we see in instances like when she confronts the entire Ronso race. Amazing. But then comes FFX-2. And Yuna is so unbearably bouncy and "Yeah!" my first reaction was "Who is she and what happened to Yuna?" It's like she's been reduced to a mere shade of the complex character she once was. It's actually kind of sad. Second, the bad guy. From what I hear (because I haven't actually played i through to the end), Shuyin is a transparent character motivated by hate and despair. Cool enough, but it's a far cry from what Seymour was- Seymour was hell-bent on destroying Spira, but he did it (maybe) because he wanted to end suffering. Again, a complex character. Shuyin, in a word... isn't. Oh, and let's not forget Vegnagun, the ULTRA MEGA WEAPON THAT'S SO SECRETLY SECRET THAT NO-ONE KNOWS ABOUT IT!!!one!1!! And finally, the music. This is proof of what you get when Nobuo Uematsu isn't involved in the music. Take, for example, Yuna's theme. In FFX it's gentle and slightly bittersweet- reminiscent of Yuna herself. There's an undertone of sadness to it that perfectly highlights what Spira is like (IMO). I mean, just listen to it: bluelaguna.net/downloads/mp3s/ffxmusic/27+-+Yuna's+Theme.mp3 And then along comes FFX-2 with this: bluelaguna.net/downloads/mp3s/ffx2music/1/04+-+Yuna's+Theme.mp3 I mean whaaaaat??? What the heck is that? And the Song of Prayer from FFX. Hauntingly beautiful, it provides a counterpoint of purity to Yevon's deceit. bluelaguna.net/downloads/mp3s/ffxmusic/20+-+Song+of+Prayer.mp3And then in FFX-2 it gets replaced with some sort of generic 'creepy temple' music- appropriately called just 'Temple'. (Ugh.) bluelaguna.net/downloads/mp3s/ffx2music/1%2F30+-+Temple.mp3Man, but that was a disappointment. =( Although, to be fair, I quite liked the battle system, though the dress shpere stuff completely took away to tactical challange of deciding who to include in your party with what abilities (though on second thoughts, that was taken away anyway because there were only three characters- YRP- at all times). And I liked the fact that Tidus comes back in the good ending, but I'm a sucker for happy ending,s so. =P

It's like she's been reduced to a mere shade of the complex character she once was. It's actually kind of sad. Yeah, I agree, although to be fair, there are shades of the original Yuna which occasionally surface. Like the way she is so dedicated to helping people; she's trying to make a life for herself and have a little fun, but she still can't help feeling like she has a duty to Spira. Occasionally, this inner conflict actually edged towards being well done, but every time it was inevitably ruined by a silly comment from Rikku or something cheesy. XD I'd say that Yuna was trying to channel Rikku's more carefree, fun loving spirit, but even Rikku seems to have undergone a personality transplant in X-2. She becomes more immature and loses those extra dimensions to her character which made her complex and interesting; instead, she's completely reduced to the perky, cheerleader type. Ah, but I think that was actually what was so great about the battle system. There were only three characters, but they could all be changed to play different roles, so there is still a tactical element there - which dresspheres to go for, where to place them on the grid and which abilities to learn first. Instead of switching Wakka for Lulu when you want to use black magic, you make Yuna switch from being a Gunner to a Black Mage. Same principle.

Hm, I suppose you're right. I guess, then, that my principal reason for not liking it was that it kind of... took away from each character's individualism. I mean, in FFX Wakka was the best at taking care of airborne enemies, but in X-2 you could have three black mages, or three warriors, etc.
Although the different costumes were a very nice bit of eye candy. =D

I got about four hours into FFX-2 and quit. The game was later stolen and I can't say I was too disappointed in that.
For me, music is a HUGE deal with my gaming experience. The music has to be good, and it has to be appropriate. I've never had a problem with a Final Fantasy before; in fact, I own most of the OST's, the music is so good. But FFX-2 was like a slap in the face and I wanted to send hate mail to Uematsu for not being involved in it. It was so annoying that for the first time EVER, I actually turned the music TV down to 0 and put on my own music, because even something emo and annoying would be better than that crap.
I didn't like dresspheres, at all, but the outfits themselves were kinda cool. It reminded me eerily of playing Barbie Dress-Up as a five year old, however, and I was just kind of like "buh?"
Paine was a cool character, and I wish she could have been in the original FFX to overshadow Yuna - because I seriously disliked Yuna in the first one. I think it was mostly her voice actor, who didn't seem to have any idea how to do what she was doing. I liked Yuna's voice actor in FFX-2; it seems like she got the hang of it.
Also, I wanted to shoot Leblanc.

Heh, it's actually the same voice actor (voice actress?) who plays Yuna for both games- (a fact for which I am profoundly grateful, because if they had changed the voice actors on top of everything else it would have just felt like one of those cheap sequels they make at half the budget of the original)- or is that what you meant? And how could I have forgotten LeBlanc? After all she's like, the creepiest character after Tingle. That scene where you have to give her a massage almost left me traumatized for life. Seriously. So yeah, I wanted to shoot her too, Tasha. =P

In the first one she sounded....fake. In the second one it was more realistic. Too bad the game sucked. Also, I still dislike her with an intensity I can't quite explain; in fact, most females in FF games annoy me. I really hated Aeris, Rinoa, and Garnet, too. I loved Rikku in FFX, but in X-2 I was just kinda like......eh. Paine was pretty awesome. ~Tasha

I don't think it's very girl-powerish. Apparently it was meant to attract teenage boys who'd never played any of the games to the series. I took a survey asking me how I got to play FF7, and one of the options (Which was true in my case) was actually:
"Saw a poster for Final Fantasy X-2, bought the game, and went in search of other series from our series."
I was stunned. It's led me to the conspiracy theory that Square KNOW FF7 was there best and that they only made X-2 to attract guys to the series itself, and in turn become devoted fans by eventually coming across 7. I played X after X-2, then 8 (which I REALLY disliked. I dont know why. 8 just annoyed me.) And finally 7. 7 blew me away, and it's never been pipped as my fave video game, although KH2 came VERY close.

To quote Leaf on the subject of X-2 and the teenage boy appeal: - "The game's main selling point is ass." This is a fair point, there is a lot of ass in the game, I mean, I have a pair of VERY short shorts reffered to as the 'Yuna shorts' because I'd bet half my materia she had them on under that Kimono in X, and just ripped half the skirt off and added ruffles to make the new outfit ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) (No offence to the new outfit, it's lovely, I just wonder how that top stays in place) Anyway, on the game itself I was glad to see the loading bars were back, because MAN did the turn based combat in X p**s me off - I like to see the silly little bars, goddammit. Yuna's split personality is kinda annoying too, because she goes from all timid in X to screeching 'GIVE IT BACK!!' *Stomps feet* at Leblanc in X-2, I mean, wtf? (Oh, you break my heart by not liking 8, Pirates, you really do )

Fear, I know what you mean. When Yuna made that dramatic entrance and then said "Give it BACK!" in a tone that threatened LeBlanc bodily harm if she didn't... I just kind of sat there in shock for a while after.

I think that a lot of people forget that two years is a long time at that age, so naturally people are going to change their out look on life. Yeah, I know Yunas change was a bit dramatic, but when you think about it, she went from 16 to 18. I know I've changed heaps just from 17 to 18, so I don't think that its too unreasonable for her to become more cheerful and out going. Especialy now that she doesn't have the shadow of Spiras happiness looming over her shoulder.
Mind you, as cool as her costume was, those shorts were REALLY tiny....

Seventeen to nineteen, but your point still stands. XD Nevertheless, it does boggle the mind to imagine that of all the careers Yuna could have chosen post-FFX, she becomes a sphere hunter (basically sky pirate) and a singer. It's weird, although that opening FMV is really cool...
About the costumes, what always gets me about RPGs is the snowy areas. Aren't Yuna and Rikku absolutely freezing in Macalania?

Yuffie wasn't freezing at the North Crater, and Selphie came from frickin' Trabia and still wore that little slicker thing of hers. *shrugs* I am forced to conclude that all scantily-clad RPG females have some sort of alternate means to generate heat. Maybe they have one of those weird handwarmer things shoved down their cleavage. ~Tasha

Except in Yuna's case she has that twisty bit of metal right across her girlie assets, hey, maybe it's a heating element?
And Rikku wears a friggin bikini (nice one, but still a bikini) although the weirdest thing is when they go swimming SHE CHANGES INTO A NORMAL SWIMSUIT! *LOLWHUT?*
That is the most illogical thing square have done since...since...um, ever?
