Just wondering, what does everyone consider their shining moment when playing through a Final Fantasy game? I don't necessarily mean conquering the biggest, baddest boss out there but what gave you the greatest sense of accomplishment, made you grin like a loon or immediately call up your friends to boast?
I have a couple. One was beating Yiazamt (FFXII). Originally I attempted him at level 80-ish with no Tournesol (in terms of "good" weapons I only had Save the Queen and Ragnarok). I started fighting him at 8:30pm, was still going at midnight, managed to get him down to his last couple of energy bars and he went pyscho. Absolutely nuts. Every round was spent reviving someone. Frustrated and tired beyond measure, I thumbed the PS2 off and vowed never to bother again.
...You guessed it. Next day was spent traipsing around collecting ingredients for the bloomin' Tournesol and I never want to see another Tartarus/Cerberus again. Damn Hell Gate's Flames! Later that evening, after four hours straight, Yiazmat got pwned.
Another would be learning all the skills of every job in FF Tactics.
I'll add more later. (Read: I've done enough bragging for now.) So what stories does everyone else have to share?

Defeating all six consecutive Dark Yojimbo fights in FFX. I was using Zanmato up until then to defeat the Dark Aeons, but six Yojimbo fights with no option of saving inbetween really put a stop to that. I then had to spend three-four days solid training my team to the point where they had every or nearly every sphere on the grid covered, so that I could actually match forces with Dark Yojimbo in a fair fight. And I won all six fights!
Mind you, my shining moment of glory was stomped on when I rushed to fight Penance with my super team, and he was a whole new order of super-charged and promptly stomped me to death.
So I Zanmato'd him.
Other achievments ... getting to the bottom of that damn undersea research platform and beating Ultima weapon in FF8. That took ages and gave me more experience points than everything else I had done in the game up until that point.
Beating the card club was also really great. I showed off to my friend how I could beat Quistis the King easily, and he could scarcely beat a random passer by playing Triple Triad. Then I picked on Xu and she was totally winning and my friend was laughing like crazy that I could beat the card King but get thrashed by an underling. I had only one move left, so I sat there for a good three minutes solid doing all the math, placed my last card down and flipped the entire board, winning the match.
The look on his face was priceless ;D

Beating Ozma. I've only managed it once and I think that was more by luck than anything else. That giant multicoloured sphere is one hell of a tough fight. Another one would probably be when I bred my first gold chocobo. And I didn't cheat to figure out how to do that - I spent ages going back to the Chocobo Sage so he'd tell me what to do next, and trying to find a wonderful chocobo. All that effort made the achievement more worthwhile. ...Of course, I didn't know at the time that if you beat Ruby Weapon the guy in Kalm gives you a gold chocobo.

Spent forever doing Hojo's little treasure hunt to get Vincent... I know I know, everyone's done it but it took me forever...
Oh, and doing that password thing for the mayor with no clues, I figured out his system myself, made me so proud ;D

Beating Emerald and Ruby Weapon. Sweet Jesus that took a lot out of me. Lots of anger, grinding, and drinking unhealthy amounts of cola to keep me up.
After that, probably completing FFIV completely. Including thrashing the Advance superboss Zeromus EX.

Penance. Without Zanmato. Good Greif that was a Hell of a fight.

Including thrashing the Advance superboss Zeromus EX. Completely agree. Those guys took FOREVER! And I was a trooper and did without the Internet guides and such. Figured it out all on me own. There goes a year of my life.

Zeromus is one helluva boss. Through some insane miracle I managed to beat him once in FFIV -- my characters were level 55ish -- but since then he keeps destroying me. I've got no idea how I pulled it off the first time.
Penance was simple enough, but only because I spent ages maxing out the sphere grid, Luck Nodes included, so my characters were absolute power-houses by the time I tackled it. The battle system allowing time for planning tactics also made it easier than it would've been had FFX used the ATB.
More achievements: stealing that bloomin' Mythril Sword from Beatrix (FFIX, first battle with her in Burmecia.) Trying to stay alive is hard enough, but attempting to swipe that weapon before I got Stock Break-ed was nearly impossible.

Heh, I made an attempt at breeding a Golden Chocobo, and after I realized just how much I had underestimated the difficulty, I abandoned it completely. However, I've gotten most of the other optional stuff in FFVII, so I'm happy with that. I need no Golden Chocobo or defeating Emerald and Ruby WEAPON to make me feel fullfilled. To name one of the first most memorable achievements, I'd have to say it was being able to encounter Yuffie the first battle I had in the Junon area forests. Second would be getting Vincent; thanks to the help of a walkthrough, I was able to find the clues just fine, but it took me FOREVER to input them in that safe, since it only gives you twenty seconds, and it took me like an hour to finally get it. However, thanks to tons of rigorous training, Lost Number was a pushover. Having the two secret characters on my team made me so proud. ;D The Huge Materia sidequests were also a bit of an accomplishment for me, particularly the Ultima materia one. Since you're timed for that one, and you have to fight a lot of monsters along the way, I was really panicking about that sidequest, although I made it through with about five minutes to spare. The cutscene where they're trying to stop the train was hilarious. Another would definitely be beating Ultimate WEAPON. Again, it took me forever because I was chasing him around and around for the total of an hour, since I didn't know you could ram him with the Highwind three times in order to make him stop and hover over a random location. I was finally able to beat him, but then he went and killed Yuffie with Shadow Flare before he would die. Ah well. I got the Ultima Sword, so that was cool. ;D Hmm, I can probably think of more off the top of my head later...

Getting all of those damn cards (I had gotten every last one of them) in FFVIII. My god, I was so happy. It was a pain in the ass too.

When I was a li'l kid, it was beating the original FF on my own. I thought it was harder than FFIV, although that might be because on FFIV, I really didn't want to ever die, so I over-leveled... Zeromus both in the old SNES and the newer GBA versions is tough... unless you level up to level 60 +... Most, if not all, of the earlier bosses you can beat leveling up as you go. Once you get to the lunar caverns, though, the difficulty level takes a sudden jump, and you really have to level. But back on topic... the original FF was tough, because you couldn't save very much, and leveling up took a long time. Furthermore, the second major boss was, relative to your level at the time, the toughest boss of the whole game, pretty much. You had to level like mad to be able to beat him, but after him, the level jumps between bosses were pretty reasonable.
Also... beating FFIX completely on my own AND beating it before my brother... every other FF prior to that one, he'd beaten before I'd even played 'em. But no. FFIX, I bought myself and beat myself, and I was so happy.

I did that with XII. Hell, I even bought a ps2 because he wouldn't let me use his.
I think I'd give beating Bahamut in VIII as my greatest achievment, MAN did that thing ever love the colour pink (in attack form)

Well, my only greatest achievement would be playing VII without saving until game over when fighting Rufus. Does chasing a PS1 memory card all over Sweden count as an FF achievement? ;D

^ Yes, yes it does. I experienced similar difficulties with a finding a Gamecube memory card. God knows how many times I played through the Dragon Roost Island dungeon in Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, but that was as far as I could manage in one sitting. (Got quick at it though. Could probably finish it in my sleep.)
