You're not alone! I agree with you. ;D I like FFX and FFXII, but they're not quite as good imo. FFIX has such a wonderful sense of humour; X and XII take themselves too seriously in comparison. And I don't count XI either, because it's a MMORPG, quite a different sort of beast from the main single player installments. Aaah, that's very true about X and XII, and maybe that's the reason I'm not so fond of them. XII especially seemed so... I suppose "Grand" would be a good word for it. From what I've played of it, I've found it very hard to feel anything towards the characters. And X? The only "funny" part that comes to mind was that laughing scene with Tidus and Yuna, and thinking of it makes me want to curl up in a ball and wish I'd never EVER had to experience it. ...Y'all just let me know if my anti-FFX spiels get too annoying 'kay? ^_^

ZOMG! LMAO! The laughing scene XDD I just made four friends endure the goodbye sphere, it was fun to watch their faces contort (or was it my eyes?) And I feel something towards XII's characters - Uh, mainly Balthier, and, uh, mainly along the lines of lust - that mo-fo is my first video game crush, he holds a VERY dear space in my heart But I love Penelo THIIIIIISSSSS much, she's so fun and cute. And Larsa, and Basch as well after a while. Vaan is okay, he seems fairly safe if not a little annoying

A very underrated game IMO. Hardly anyone seems to like it, there's too many FF7 & 8 fans out there, most of them never seem to think much of anything about poor old 9.
My friend stopped taking the game seriously when he saw that the main villain wears a g-string. I have to say Kuja did look much better after he went Trance. And he blew up a whole planet! Pretty darn impressive, not even Sephy got that strong. He was even on his way to destroying the whole universe, though I think he was a little too crazy by that point.
I actually managed to do all the Chocobo hunting for this. Oh! And Ozma!!! Lamest optional boss in the 'verse! Argh! A ball! A flaming ball, that's all it was! The number of times I started a fight with that damn thing and I got nuked by meteor before I could even move. Grrr. Took ages to nail that thing.

Ye gods, so many things I want to comment on! And, one of the world map areas was called "King Ed Plains". *smacks forehead* Oh, like Edgar from FFVI! There's a baby chocobo in the black mage village that they name. i can never remember it... Does anybody know where that name comes from? His name's Bobby Corwen. Vivi (I think) asks, "Why do you keep calling him by his full name?" which is a reference to Bartz's (FFV) chocobo, Boco. There's a card of him too (and ain't he a cute widdle spwite?) Apparently in IX one calls you a b*****d. Yeah, but that's only after Vivi tries to thaw it out of an ice block and accidentally sets it on fire. I'd have nasty words too if that happened to me. XD On artwork: I love Amano's stuff. True, some of his characters look a little (okay, a lot) androgynous but the softer style attracts me more than Nomura's jagged edges. I mean, I like both of the artists but overall I prefer Amano. I mean, he even makes Steiner look awesome! (I also heart Steiner, for the record...) On that damn skipping game: I can't even dodge 200 frickin' lightning bolts and get Lulu's Venus Sigil (the only bloody thing I haven't done in FFX!) I have no hope completing the Skipping Rope Game of Doom. x.x On FFIX's popularity: I think the reason it's considered one of the least successful FFs is due to the fact that VII and VIII were (at the time) the only Final Fantasy games released to us Westerners, so we had an expectation that IX would be set in a similar, modern-ish world. We hadn't been introduced to red mages, dragoons, dinky little airships or crystals. We thought Limit Breaks were a staple. Many of us probably wouldn't have even known the lines, "You spoony bard!" or "I, Garland, will knock you down!!" Hence, our expectations and FF vision was greatly different from that of fans of the original, and indeed from the Squaresoft staff. I think we were just shocked that something we'd grown to love could change so drastically. For me... I adored the medieval setting from the outset. Knights and fair maidens and all that jazz makes me grin. I found the plot went a little haywire towards the end, maybe because there wasn't enough foreshadowing of Zidane's origins, but I did read an excellent analysis of Necron over at gamefaqs which made me feel slightly less weird about his random appearance at the end. The music's also fantastic -- who hasn't hummed Rose of May at least once in their lives? Oh, and Kuja's theme? Would top One-Winged Angel if only it had a few extra bars. And on FFXII ('cos I can't resist): Lame characters! Lame, lame, lame! It started out okay (like, when I was playing as Reks) but then the character development just flew out the window along with the good voice actors. The only thing that remotely attracts me about this game is the father/son dynamics between Balthier and Cid, but even that wasn't explored to its full angsty potential. See, that's where FFIX excelled: random conversations between characters (NPCs included) added flavour to the world, showing how Zidane and co. grew and changed. The script in FFXII seemed purely a tool to forward the plot rather than highlight a character's emotional state or gain insight into their mind. Ashe and everyone seem whitewashed and more wooden than Long John Silver's leg.

I have no hope completing the Skipping Rope Game of Doom. I can't do it either. I've managed to get above 100 jumps before, but that's the best I can do before my eyes cross and I lose the rhythm. XD Oh yeah, I loved that too. I'd never played any Final Fantasy before VII at that point, but I found the medieval setting a refreshing change. I agree so much. The NPCs felt like real people with their own personalities and lives, even if we only got to see snippets of their conversation.

I remember that bit. I was as shocked as Zidane at how ready Dagger was to marry him. And their accents ... I'm Scottish myself and I don't sound anything like that! Though I have to admit a lot of scots actually do, in some cases worse.
I prefer Moogle speak. Kupo. Says it all really.

I've played through the game multiple times and still have to squint at the text every time a dwarf speaks. It's like shifting into a different kind of spelling mindset when in Conde Petit.
As for Dagger readiness to marry Zidane, I think at that point she's come so far from being a naive princess that she'll balk at nothing, especially for the good of her kingdom. After all, she's hung out with the Tantalus crew and has travelled Gaia, so she's more world-wise at that stage. (Plus that scene is very telling of Zidane's character. He's free-spirited yet extremely loyal, so he'd take such a pact seriously.)
Truth to tell, I was more mortified at the Vivi/Quina marriage. o.O

I thought the dwarves' accent was great and I didn't have any trouble understanding it, though I suppose 'ken' must sound strange to anyone who isn't familiar with it.
I think it's funny how seriously Zidane takes their 'marriage' compared to Dagger. She just sees it as a way to get through the village, not a real marriage, and she has no problem making the vows. But you can practically see the word 'commitment' flashing through Zidane's mind throughout the whole ceremony. XD

Well, to answer your question, Savvy, it's because it's not as popular. It came after two high-profile games, and instead of taking the series a step forward, it seemed to take three steps back and into the SNES days of fantasy fantasy fantasy. Most people (Stateside) who played it had only played its PSX brethren, so all the homage to older games and junk just sort of fell flat with them.
It seems to cater more to the "veterans," those of us who were around to play the older SNES games. Me, I thought it told a much better story than either Seven or Eight... especially Eight. Ugh, how that game got so many "great game OMG!"s is beyond me.
Anyway. IX. Great game. The hero's got a tail, and the heroine has a horn, or at least used to. What more could you ask for?
