But Amano's characters were a little more out there in terms of variation - and he didn't feel the need to give Garnet a short skirt and/or a huge chest: that's two points in my book anyday. Aaaaah poor, poor Tifa. I wonder if Nomura knew what the fans of the world were going to do to her when he created her. I don't think anyone but Amano could have created Quina either... That character (did anyone ever decide on a gender??) is probably one of the most unique FF characters in existence.

Amano's artwork is too over the top for me. Sometimes I can't even tell which character I'm looking at. Oh, I definitely agree with you there. I don't find his artwork particularly appealing, but I absolutely love the character designs for FFIX. The characters are a lot more diverse, like fear says.

I absolutely adore Amano's work. I spent $40 on a book called The Sandman: The Dream Catchers that he illustrated (it was written by Neil Gaiman). I once saw an Amano artbook but it was like, $200 and at the time I had no money. I'd totally but it now, though. I also have a few Amano pictures up on my wall in my bedroom.
Yeah, I'm Amano obsessed.

I read that originally because it was Neil Gaiman, and then after the fact I realized, "OMG! It was the same Amano from the Final Fantasies!" I just <3 that book in every aspect. I need to borrow it from my friend and read it again. (And pardon the fact that this really has nothing to do with FFIX, but I had to comment because I <3 that book so much.)

Back on track then, is FFIX considered to be the least successful of the FF series? It does seem that a lot of people skipped it.

It was massively underated! (*sharpens knife for dissin the IX* IX was a tribute to the origonal final fantasy, VII and VIII were more furteristic and not that 'final fantasy'
Lots of people also loved it, though, I know many people who pretty much despise all the others, and LOVE IX with a passion.
IX is definitly one of the best final fantasy's ever, a beautiful re-rendering of the origional concept and a f**k**g fantastic story/graphic/characters. The graphics were AMAZING for ps1, I mean, SO good. ANd Zidane/Garnet is love, LOVE!!

I'm playing it on an emu atm. I love Zidane. Seriously love. And Garnet is sooo adorable! And Vivi!!!!!! I just want to hug him and tell him it's ok I love him!!! Steiner is so stupid and lovely too... That's all the characters I've got to know so far but it is love, and I want to live in that world because it seems so lovely.

Back on track then, is FFIX considered to be the least successful of the FF series? It does seem that a lot of people skipped it. I think it might be, at least of the most recent FFs. I know a lot of people who have played FFVII and onwards, but somehow missed out FFIX. It's really a shame, because like fear says, FFIX is fantastic. I don't know why so many people skipped it. Maybe because it was released quite late on the PS1 and a lot of people had already moved on to the next gen consoles? Then again, I think that both FFVII and FFVIII were released as PC games, but FFIX never was for some reason, so people might have missed out on it because of that.

See, I nearly didn't play FFIX because I disliked VIII so much. But then Zidane came along and kicked Squall's emo ass so I was happy and a fan Poor IX. Maybe they should re-release it onto the PSP or something so people will actually play it and realise how fantastic a game it is. I'll never forget how hard I laughed when Steiner is chasing after Zidane and Garnet but winds up crashing into the castle wall instead. So hysterical! And the world of FFIX is just fantastic. It really captures the imagination ^_^ *sigh* IMO there hasn't been a FF game since that's topped it, but I feel I may be alone in that opinion. At least this Dissidia game has Zidane in it. I'm looking forward to hearing more about that game as time goes on.

Back on track then, is FFIX considered to be the least successful of the FF series? It does seem that a lot of people skipped it. Hmm couldn't it be FF XI instead? Okay so a lot of people somehow missed FF IX, but I've never even heard of people talk about FF XI unless I ask them. What's really popular around here seems to be FF X and FF VIII. FF VII only got more popular among the youngsters after AC I think because the original game was probably played by people who are now at least 18 or somewhere in their 20s. Also a lot of people here refuse to play FF VII even after AC because the graphics are so bad compared to the newer FF and all the other pretty games. Not to mention it's almost impossible to get copies of FF VII in game stores around here now. So you'll probably have to order online. Anyway growing up, since I was about 12 till now, it's FF X and FF VIII that's most talked about around me in real life. Even FF XII is not that hyped up around here, probably because the English is too difficult or something, I don't know. Or maybe because imperial armies just don't interest the average teen. Hmm also the lack of romantic elements I guess.

I've got a fair few friends who are completely obsessed with it. I myself don't play MMORPGs because I can't afford to And it's true about VII's graphics being a problem for some people. I'm lucky because I was 11 when it came out so I played it and thought "OMG these are the best graphics EVAR!" (and now laugh myself silly whenever I remember thinking that). Still, at least they can watch AC and get some kind of idea about the story. IX did have the misfortune of being released late and then being dwarfed by X when that came out not that long afterwards. Personally, I thought X was horrible - but that's got a lot to do with the voice acting. IX at least is easier for younger gamers to come across now seeing as, compared to VII, the graphics are considerably better. Maybe Dissidia will bring about a wave of FFIX nostalgia As for XII, I haven't played it that much but I wasn't massively impressed. Don't know why but it just didn't capture my imagination like my favourite FF games do.

*sigh* IMO there hasn't been a FF game since that's topped it, but I feel I may be alone in that opinion. You're not alone! I agree with you. ;D I like FFX and FFXII, but they're not quite as good imo. FFIX has such a wonderful sense of humour; X and XII take themselves too seriously in comparison. And I don't count XI either, because it's a MMORPG, quite a different sort of beast from the main single player installments.
