As those of you who may have read La Editor's thread about the fic fandubs know, I'm considering putting together a GA podcast. I've always wanted to do a podcast, but this seems like a pretty good place to put one together. A few ideas: I can do audio editing if need be (I am, after all, a stagehand - if I didn't know how to edit audio my father would murder me in my sleep, since he's a stagehand too), although I kind of like the idea of shuffling that duty around a bit so that it doesn't hit one person too hard, and so we have someone else the duty can fall to if someone is busy. I think once every other week or something along those lines, at about 30 - 45 minutes, is a respectable time for a podcast. The podcast could be sort of about all things GA - there could be writing tips and stuff, fandom debates and discussion, any Final Fantasy related news discussions, a thread of the week, etc. I also had the idea that we could, at the end, read a snippet of a FF7 fic one of us has enjoyed recently. I obviously want to be involved, and have the necessary gear (once again - stagehand) to do long-distance audio recording via Skype or some other program. I thought Pen and La Editor might be interested as well, although I'm willing to accept any help with hosting (the show) and idea concepts. A common problem people have with using Skype for recording podcasts is that Skype doesn't record your voice, just the voices of everyone else you're conference calling - so I'll just set up a different Skype account and have my husband's PC record the conversation. Easy fix, eh? Thoughts? Ideas? I really want to do this, at some point after the new site rolls out, so any help would be appreciated.

Well, we could use time to do several things, though you highlighted a lot of it. Some time talking about new releases, recent debates, hints about ffvii and cool little facts that a lot of people don't know... (Like how Aeris/Sephiroth was supposed to be canon, lol), answer questions about parts of the game or interpretations, mini-walkthrough moments for those who send in a 'wtf, how did I DO THIS!?' questions, best fan fiction stories would be good, but I can also see something like us restarting the monthly mini-story thing Mari tried getting up, and maybe taking the time to read out the first bit of it... maybe even a segment on the little errors of the FFVII world thanks to retconning, or just plain blanking out on the creator's parts...
There's so much that can be done!
I want in, if you want... I'll get one of these skype thingies...

I agree, you've covered many core and key points to making a podcast - it's obvious that now a bone structure should be created of events. Help organize a movement from week to week with the same ideas. That would call for tracking in detail what was talked about as well as other parts moving to gather new information and feeding it back into the editor to put it together.
It's obvious a team should be called for. I say, put together a watered down (but more concrete then bullets)course of events for the podcast and then form your team around the expertise of what you'll be discussing. That way people can audition voices and assistance into categorizes - which would make it easier for you to arrange a team.
But the podcast sounds like an amazing idea - but, you already knew that.

Well, I have to get the site up and running first, but I kind of wanted to start the thread to flesh the idea out some. While La would be sort of running the whole fandub thing, I'll be setting this up. I'm basically just soliciting ideas and finding out who'd want to be involved, and who has experience with this sort of thing. XD
Afterward, though, I'd probably be on Skype a lot, talking to people and seeing who can tolerate who, and who has a decent voice and a lot to contribute, etc.

Well, I have experience in audio editing and other various forms of sending information across long distances - count me in.

(Ra-ra, I'll be taking advantage of this fact. Fufufu.)
I'm backing you all the way, Tasha. :] I don't really know much about podcasts, but I think it's a great idea.

Ha ha ha ha - well I'm glad I can assist just another person, La.
Yeah, I'm actually part of a band - but we all live 1000's of miles apart - so all sound transfer and mixing happens through electronic means.

The use of words expressing more than that of their literal intention! Now that. Is. Irony.

I laughed out loud at the band thing.
That said, I learned guitar off a dude on webcam.
Yeah, I'm behind the idea, but all I can contribute is musical talent and the ability to recite the mathematical formula for damage in FF7 battles.
EDIT: HOLY SH*T!!!!!
If I combine the two... WIN

And then it can be used as a theme song for the podcast...
Epic.
Win.

That is another thing I wanted to look into. Does anyone know how far the Fair Use guidelines extend? I'd like to use some Final Fantasy music in the podcast - it seemed appropriate - but I'm not sure how much I could use without getting bi***-slapped by Square. Anyone?

Well there's the Fullmetal Alchemist podcast running on itunes at the moment, and I believe that's controlled by fans - having nothing to do with the actual creators - they leak at least seven minutes of each episode. And I remember him saying that they had to be wise on what sound clips to choose because of that.
I don't know the specifics (googling at the moment) but I'm 99% that we could easily use some music and be within the bounds.

Couldn't we email Square's English help-center or whatever it is, too? I mean, it's free publicity, and they could give permission that exceeds even the Fair use guidelines if we're lucky, right?

Okay - fair use explains that:
Because it is a podcast and gathers no profit - and the fact taht it plays of fanfiction which is a huge copyright LOL in the first place - I say we're golden and to go for it.

This seems like a great idea to me, Tasha. Expandin' the GA, strengthening our hold on the interwebs...
But all seriousness, I do like the idea of a staff regulated podcast. It's a neat little suggestion.
I don't have much experience with podcasts, though (disregarding the FFXIII.net pods I occasionally listen to), so there really isn't much for me to offer. :p
