yet another attempt to breath life into a forgotten board. For those of you who don't know what paranoia is here is a description for you:
Imagine a world designed by Kafka, Stalin, Orwell, Huxley, Sartre, the Marx Brothers and that crazy old man at the airport bar at 2am...
Paranoia is a darkly humorous Tabletop Game that takes place After The End, in Alpha Complex, an underground city run by a supercomputer known variously as The Computer and "Friend Computer". After most of the human race was wiped out by a freak accident that sparked a nuclear war, The Computer tried to figure out what went wrong. Unfortunately, The Computer's databases had been corrupted, and after finding some Cold War propaganda, it came to the conclusion that Communists caused the disaster. Or possibly some other nebulous threat; no one is quite sure what happened any more, because the real history of the world is heavily controlled.
Now, "Friend Computer" rules Alpha Complex with an iron fist, its dystopian society organized in a hierarchy of "security clearances" based on the electromagnetic spectrum (from lowly Infrared worker drones, to Red grunts and on up the rainbow, all the way up to the Ultraviolet elite), supported by a bureaucracy so huge and convoluted no one's quite sure who's in charge of what any more, with teams of Troubleshooters (their job is to find the source of the trouble and shoot it) sent by The Computer to deal with any of a number of threats to Alpha Complex, including Communists (and other secret societies) and unregistered Mutants (individuals with bizarre and unpredictable powers). The thing is, due to years of clone breeding, overexposure to radiation, and other snafus, everyone in Alpha Complex is a mutant. Everyone is also a member of one or more secret societies ranging from simple: Anti-mutants, the less simple Humanists: who wish to overthrow the computer but are bogged down by thier own red tape. To the complex: A society completley formed of spies so that they'd have something to spy on and wouldn't be killed.
You guys will be Troubleshooters working for Friend Computer, trying to solve (often impossible) missions while keeping their mutant powers a secret, advancing the cause of their secret society, and trying to advance up the social ladder in Alpha Complex. The over-the-top darkly satiric tone of the game ensures that Hilarity Ensues as the player characters try to juggle their responsibilities (or even survive). Player infighting is encouraged, to the point that some editions recommend that there should never be a greater danger than each other, and turnover is so high each player gets several (standard is five) backup clones with which to replace themselves if (or more likely when, depending on the tone of the game) they die.
That's the gist of it anyway. This however being a board devoted to Final Fantasy has things a bit different to keep with the theme.
Since nothing like this has been performed here every playable character will have 10 lives (or clones) and we're set in the Shinra building after one of Hojo's AI programs won amock
sign up to become troubleshooters... I mean Turks.
