I have just noticed that there is no board dedicated to this, my favorite of the Final Fantasies. This is unacceptable - hence my now-creation of it. :3 Firstly, as I said, this is my favorite, and I'm always a bit sad that so few people have played it. BUT that's something easily rectified, because guess what, guys?! The remake of FFIV for the DS comes out in the USA on July 22! Supposedly, the European release is to follow that. You have no idea how pumped I am for that, although I am a little wary about the voice overs (yes, this game has voice-overs, now! Or... at least the Japanese version did...), but with luck they'll have good people doing it. So... anyway... who here's played this game? What do you think of it? This is the place to discuss that! Let's not forget that this game has many things going for it, despite it's relatively low following: 1) "You Spoony Bard" is one of the best insults. Ever. 2) Nobuo's soundtrack for this game is one of his best. It has garnered a lot of praise - and it deserves it, too. Indeed, its 'Theme of Love' is even taught in Japanese music curricula. Just how many video game tunes can you say /that/ about? 3) Games of this time were not necessarily known for thick plots or characters with lots of personality, but this game had a pretty fair amount of that going on. There were plenty of interesting and memorable characters around. Also, unfortunately some of the plot of this game /had/ to be cut out due to space limitations on the cartridges, which is why some parts of it come across as a bit plot-hole-y, I think. But even with the holes, the plot of this is impressive for its time, I think. 4) Let's not forget the dancers, eh? ;D 5) The Summons here were awesome! I could go on listing really cool features of this game, but I'm kind of tired, and... yeah. ONE LAST THING: I have to remark on this video/song someone showed me about a week ago. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NT6CElR36MIt is epic and hilarious, and it's about the villains of this game. It's a song set to the music of the boss battles, and it's well worth a listen AND a watch.

Huzzah! Another FFIV fan *dances* I'm still playing the GBA version that I picked up a good while back. Or rather, I was leveling like a madwoman in it before becoming distracted by Crisis Core. I haven't yet beaten it but I remember getting to the Moon o.O I actually really liked the game so far, but am more often than not easily distracted. So they're coming out with yet another version of it? With voiceovers? It's too bad I don't have a DS >_< because that sounds really interesting! Also, I love how Cecil was mistaken for a girl at... I forget which bar.. but it amused the crap out of me. I like to call those "Mana Moments" for my own special reasons XD

Heh. Easily distracted is always bad for finishing video games. xD That's why I always try to finish them as quickly as possible the first time, /before/ I get distracted. Crisis Core is a passable distraction, though. And yep! Already came out with that other version in Japan, too, and I've watched videos on YouTume. They're awesome! Or at least they look it. Haha, yeaaah. But can you really expect otherwise, what with his hair & all? For the DS version, if you’re curious, here’s the English site for it: na.square-enix.com/ff4/You can see a trailer and the character designs & stuff. It’s actually pretty neat. And… I found out recently that apparently there is a sequel to FFIV, which is for Japanese phones. It takes place 17 years after the original game and follows Cecil & Rosa’s son. Honestly, this kind of annoys me, though, because although there’s good potential for a sequel, I like how the original game ended. It’s nice to leave things up to the imagination. Plus, the game’s for cell phones, which means it has a snowball’s chance in hell of being ever released for English speaking audiences. Ah well… might still turn out neat, though, eh?

Normally I try to do the same, but I had gotten to a point where I realized "Oh crap, I didn't level enough earlier on >_<" and being the person I am.. I just scrapped my game and started over! Generally, when I do that I try and get to the highest level my patience will allow before striking off to beat whatever bad guys I need to.
Then, I lost my internet (on my day off no less!) and had more extra money on me than I should have. I do fully intend to get back to IV when I do the whole "Complete in its entirety" dealie on CC.
As for Cecil's lovely unintentional androgeny.. well, square usually tries to pretend such things don't exist XD So having them actually crack on it gave me so many giggles. Edward I'd have expected that for, but they usually conveniently ignore the sometimes rather femme appearance of their leading male character.
Just checked out the main site, and good lord that looks positively amazing! D: I'll make it a point to rummage through youtube later when nobody's trying to sleep. The site is lagging the crap out of my internet, which I am uncertain as to whether or not I should forgive them for >_>
I always get terminally annoyed for cellphone-only sequels to games I've taken to. Completely setting aside my -complete- agreement with you that, more often than not (I haven't yet beaten IV, so I'm speaking generally) the end is best left with a little mind-candy... there's also the fact that there IS such a small chance for these games to make it outside of japan.
The only series I could think of having a chance, off the top of my head, of overseas distribution where cell-games are concerned would be anything regarding the FF7 franchise, and did either BC or that DoC continuation game make it over? If the latter did make it over, i know BC didn't, that still makes it a 50/50 chance. That being with their most popular FF Franchise to date.
I dunno, it might be pretty neat. I think the best we can hope for, save for going way the crap over to japan, is that someone on that end will be kind enough to upload transcripts of the game itself. D: At least until Square is more willing to take certain risks where these things are concerned.
...Holy crap I am so sorry for the WALL OF TEXT >_< And any possible disjointed screwyness. I just got home from work not long ago xD

FFIV? Oh, boy. When Rydia did that time-skippy thing, reappearing ten years older and bossier than ever my shipping sense went, "YOU NEED TO BOSS AROUND KAIN HIGHWIND, LITTLE MISSY!" Only she never really did, in the way I wanted her to at least. Ahh... I think I beat the game once, and on my second playthrough I find myself hopelessly lost on the Moon. Don't even remember what I was doing in the first place, so I'll probably start over again.

The link is dead; the user removed the video that this link was connected to. Consider locating a new YouTube video about FFIV. Also, I recall playing the PS remake. The "new" cinemas were poor but I didn't care. I wanted my filthy grips on this game when I first read about it in the SNES' debut game strategy guide. The initial stateside release bears no comparison to the harshness of the original game; in Japan, they released an "easy type" version after hearing the bitter response to the initial release and its obscene difficulty rating. The PS version (paired with Chrono Trigger) rectified that rather quickly. Oh, and I despise it when a sequel is produced on a f**k**g personal handset that will never arrive stateside. But that's what you get when you get much of your entertainment from a Japanese game developer. You know, I'm just going to create a Flash game based on 8-Bit Theater just because that happens....

The makers of The After have said they are interested in publishing the sequel for a non cell phone handheld outside of Japan. Here's hoping something comes of this.

Wheeee... Totally missed most replies to this during my, like... six month absence. So... I hope admins will forgive me for replying to an 'old' thread. Okeydokey... Since the link I posted ages ago for the entertaining song is dead, I found another video of the same thing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=e46ewvQDhY4It's basically a song sung by the four elemental fiends about the game to their own boss battle music. Yep. =) Moving on... If The After /does/ get ported to something in America (aka: DS, plz? I'd even take a wii downloadable game), that will completely make my week when/if the release date is announced. >__> As for the DS version: It is tough, man. >< The pink flans are EVIL. I cannot beat them. At all. -shudders- My only advice is level up like a mad thing, because /everything/ is harder on it. My levels upon finally beating the DS version were all in the 70s. My levels upon beating the GBA port were, oh... low 50s, I think? And my levels on the PSX version... I dunno, because I lost my old memory card. But I know they weren't as high as 70s.

Hmm, that's funny. I've been playing FFIV DS for a while now, and I didn't notice it as being particularly difficult. I mean, yeah, the boss fights are pretty darn tough. But not more than I'd expect from a good FF, really. (Actually, the worst scare I had was when I fought Scarmiglione, beat his first form easily, then NEGLECTED TO HEAL UP before crossing the bridge and unexpectedly coming across his second form. ...Still beat him anyway.) I have noticed, though, that my levels are pretty high for the proportion of story covered (compared to, say, FFXII): Troia, lvl 29-30. Edit: Also, that video was funny the first time. Extra funny now that I know more about FFIV.

Well... coming from the much easier (albeit partially because of some fun glitches and some stat-breaking weapons) GBA version, the DS version seemed really hard to me, I guess? And also some of the tricks and things I remembered from the older versions of the game didn't necessarily work in this one, as well as some of the random enemies being loads harder. (mostly because some of the attacks were made extra-evil... like Flame. duuude, that does epically ridiculous amounts of damage. ><)
As for the video... hehehe. Isn't it though? xD ♥
EDIT: Also... if you're at Troia, then you're almost at one of my favorite parts of the game. ^__^ One that I was really upset they didn't voice over. D= There are a couple parts I'd hoped they'd voice over, and they didn't! ;___;
I also have to say that I wished they'd done more in the more realistic, ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS FMV a la the opening video. Alas... lulz. If I'd been in charge of the remake, I would have done the whole thing with voices, though. haha. ^.^;

Hahah, that'd probably fry the cartridge, trying to do all that. XD But yeah, more cutscenes in the realistic graphics/voiced-over cutscenes would have been wonderful.
Also, after passing the (SPOILER) Tower of Zot, Cecil is now one of my favorite characters. And Kain. (Granted, not that they had much competition to begin with, but hey.) (END SPOILER)
I have noticed that some enemies deal absolutely ridiculous amounts of damage. Like in the aforementioned Tower, there's these sword-wieldy monsters. They killed Tellah in two hits, AND they have a counterattack move. TT_TT That said, though, it's STILL better than FFII, where the monsters were manageable and then the bosses were WAAAAAAAY tougher.

^___^ Cecil is one of my favorite characters, too. And Kain. Lulz. =) Hell - I love all the main characters in this game. Even Gilbert Edward. And yes - the ridiculous amounts of damage is... ridiculous. I made copious use of the spells Stop, Slow, Protect and Shell to at least make some attempt at reducing this. Also, Kain spent as little time on the ground as possible. Lulz. The Tower of Zot is one place I think a FMV cutscene would have been EPIC. (FMV meteor, anyone? =D =D =D ) And... augh! I was so frustrated that they voiced over & cutscene'd (SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Tellah's death, but they didn't voice over when you rescued Rosa! (END SPOILER!!!!!!!!!) By the way... have you noticed how when you go to your menu screen, whatever character you have as your lead says something? This is, I believe, the most awesome feature of the remake. Check it every time you go somewhere new for every character. Some of them have interesting or just plain funny things to say. Sometimes the things they say even change from floor to floor or section to section in a dungeon. ♥ But... augh, so last night I felt like replaying the endgame, right? So... I make my way from the final savepoint to the end, and I don't bother running from anything. I fight every Behemoth, etc. that I encounter, because you get healed completely right before the final battle, anyway. And I get there, and I get most of the way through the battle, when I get killed. ><; It was sheer bad timing, because usually I have Kain at full health, as he avoids most of the heavy hitting attacks, so he can assist in Phoenix Down'ing weaklings like Edge and Rydia and occasionally Rosa. But he happened to be down at the wrong time and get pwn'd by two strong attacks in a row before he could give Rosa and elixer, and, and... aaaaugh. ;___; EDIT: AWESOME ANNOUNCEMENT: Apparently the ESRB has posted a rating for FFIV: The After (E, for the curious), which means that there's an extremely high chance of the thing being released in North America. The ESRB is the North American video game ratings board, and they normally don't bother rating something, unless it's being ported over. Also, apparently it's a port for the wii (a downloadable game, perhaps?). No release date is yet set. SO... point is, the chance for FFIV: The After to actually see American shores is rather high. =D =D =D And if you desire proof: www.esrb.org/ratings/synopsis.jsp?Certificate=26415'Tis ESRB's rating. It's actually kind of funny reading the reasons behind the rating. Bacchus Wine gets mentioned.

So... sequel, then? I've become inordinately attached to the FFIV cast after a relatively small amount of time, so the only thing that would make me happier is an FFX sequel. A PROPER one. (But that's neither here nor there.) Also I was outraged that they didn't voice over (SPOILER!!!) the scene where Rydia comes back all grown up to save the party. That scene was so cool (END SPOILER)

Unless ESRB posted the rating just to toy with us, then YES. Sequel! And from what I've heard, it's a pretty decent sequel, too. What I've read of the storyline seems neat, but I won't post anything about that here, because I'm sure other people don't want it spoiled. =o
But... hehe. I am happy for your attachment! ^__^ Aren't they just lovable? There are no characters in FFIV I actively dislike - at least that I can think of offhand. =o
And oh yeah! D:< I was mad about that scene, too! And... there're two other scenes later on that I won't mention yet that are, as I recall, unvoiced, but which hold my great love.
You know... it would be super awesome of some really good mangaka did a manga of this game. <__< Or... even an OVA. hehe. Probably not going to happen, but I can dream. xD But think of the gorgeous panels of certain scenes! =D =D =D
And I would love to see drawn or animated out (SPOILER!!!!) the fight between Cecil & Kain in Fabul, (END SPOILER) at least...
