Maybe she realised how horrible the world was in those times and she was realistic enough to understand that Cloud would have to cope with many trials in his lifetime... but she hoped he'd find some "silver lining" to make it all worthwhile. OMG cliche I know I couldn't help it though. Seriously, that's the first thing I thought of. >.<

...just so we all know, she really ISN'T a poet. I just sorta made that part up, thinking that everybody would recognize it as being false. Don't wanna start another "Vincent is from Wutai" thing...
And wow, people are putting way too much thought into the mother... maybe if you've got a fic that's supposed to deal with his mother or something, then sure, but if it's just discussion... there's not much to do any sort of conjecturing.

Bah, kaj. Way to suck the fun out of the conversation. Sure, we don't have anything to go on. That's the point. We're just stretching our brains a little here.

Could have had to do with his dad in some way, too... I'd heard speculation before that his dad just left them, but I know there was a part in the game where Cloud mentioned that his dad was dead and so it was just him and his mom. If we're speculating about his name, maybe whatever happened to his dad had some influence on it. Or maybe his dad in general just had some influence--might not have just been his mom that chose the name. (Cloud said his dad was dead; he never said how or when or anything like that.)

Whoa, Qwi-Xux... now you got me thinking about his father. To tell you the truth, we know less about him than we do the mother so perhaps it does have something to do with him.... I don't know! But it sure is fun to think about it. XD

I love speculating about things like this. Especially getting to think about what Cloud's dad might have been like. And his mom, too. I saw a fanart the other day of Cloud and Tifa as really, really little kids, with Cloud giving her a little kiss. The artist had drawn their mothers (at least, I assume it was their mothers) watching it happen and it made me start wondering 'hmmm, would Cloud and Tifa's mothers have been friends? They were neighbors after all...'
Okay, I'm so getting off topic. Sorry. I speculate about everything; I think it's the writer in me that wants to know all the details and backgrounds and...yeah. Anyway, my point is: speculation is fun. And I do wonder what sort of father Cloud had.

Bah, kaj. Way to suck the fun out of the conversation. Sure, we don't have anything to go on. That's the point. We're just stretching our brains a little here. Hey, hey. It was either that or start another "you can revive Aerith by going to the church and giving the kids the flower she gave you at the beginning of the game and then she'll talk to you and then you take the Phoenix Pinion she gives you to the City of the Ancients and go back down to where Cloud puts her to rest and then a new path will open up and you can walk to the bottom of the lake where you give her body the Phoenix Pinion which revives her" type of rumor. Just sayin'. Could have had to do with his dad in some way, too... I'd heard speculation before that his dad just left them, but I know there was a part in the game where Cloud mentioned that his dad was dead and so it was just him and his mom. When'd he mention his father? I don't ever remember there being a part in the game when he mentioned his father. Maybe in the Lifestream, but even then, I don't think he ever mentions his father... But then that just begs the question: WHY doesn't he mention his father? Or, better yet, why doesn't he mention his MOTHER? After all, he watches her die at Nibelheim. ...or does he? What if that lil' addition of his mother into his telling of the story was just another part of his fake persona lingo? Oh ho ho ho...

He mentioned his father when he was telling everyone the story of what happened in Nibelheim, while they were all in Kalm. When Barret asks Cloud to talk about his family, he has the choice of saying he doesn't want to talk about it, or 'all right.' Now, I don't know what happens if you say you don't want to talk about it--maybe you never hear about his dad. But if you select 'all right,' Cloud says: "My father...died when I was still very young. That's why my mom...was living alone in this house." So he didn't say exactly when or how or anything. And yeah, his memory was screwed up about some things at the time (because he was confusing himself with Zack) but especially given that Zack's parents were both still living, I doubt this is something he would have confused. He would have known what happened to his own father and mother. Because he does mention his mother, both when his head is screwed up and later, when he and Tifa are in the Lifestream and he's piecing his memories back together. When he finds the real memory of the Nibelheim incident, he tells Sephiroth: "Mom...Tifa...my town...give it back." Oooookay, I apparently have way too much time on my hands. Well, that and Cloud and Tifa's pasts are fresh on my mind because I'm writing a fanfic about them right now.

He mentioned his father when he was telling everyone the story of what happened in Nibelheim, while they were all in Kalm. Strange... I remember going to that scene, but I don't remember him saying anything about his dad... I'll have to look back into that. My FFVII-ego has been felled. Because he does mention his mother, both when his head is screwed up and later, when he and Tifa are in the Lifestream and he's piecing his memories back together. When he finds the real memory of the Nibelheim incident, he tells Sephiroth: "Mom...Tifa...my town...give it back." Huh... my memory is getting pretty darn spotty, now... that's a shame.

Oh! Maybe she was a hippie! THIS! XD I like to imagine that Cloud's mom's name was River and that she was from a hippie family who all named their children after things in nature. lol And yeah I know that would be really strange but when the idea popped into my head it made me giggle.
