I dunno. I have a huge problem with people trying to work Earth-religion into Gaia, but when it comes to brands...well, Cid smokes Marlboro, doesn't he? It certainly looks like a Marlboro pack in the fighting scenes in FF7. It doesn't seem to much of a stretch to use certain kinds of brands: alcohol, drinks, kinds of food. When you get into actual restaurants (McDonalds, KFC, et cetera) and big-name companies like AT&T and Time-Werner then it gets a little hokey, but I have no problem with someone mentioning someone drinking a Coke, or sipping a Sapporo, or smoking a Camel.

I gotta agree with u guys. I mean, Gaia is a world in a universe that is completely different than our own (god, I sound like one of them creepy astrophysicists that live in dark libraries hunched over books). The likelihood of us and them having the same holidays is 9.7823776485762 times 10 to the power of 45877584 (basically improbable). Same with religion. There isn't really any mention of religion in any of the games, except from some small things put in by Sqeenix (ie: Sephiroth's name comes from the Jewish Kaballa text, Aerith's church).

Uh, did you miss Minerva's theme through DoC and CC? Because I'm pretty sure that she's the GODdess of that world. Thus, there is a religion, which can be followed. Perhaps it was the Cetra who followed her, but she's still there... Thus, one of the main themes of religion was followed quite closely by FFVII's plotline, intentional or not.
And Korean BBQ Special. Let's not forget about that.
I get bothered by RL products getting into FFVII fandom, but then again, as Costa said, there were Marlboro ciggs in the original game, plus references to "God" and "Christ" (thank you, Cid!)
I'm not religious, but I've explained my opinions on holidays already, so I won't do it again.

I don't get overly bothered by product placement in fics I know I've done it, but I did have a thought thats woth mentioning: what about Generonyms? As in Brand-Name items used by the general populous as the generic name for a product?
For example 'Sellotape', 'Band-Aid', 'Zippo' and even 'Velcro' are actually brand names, and yet we use them as a general term for all products of that type. For those of you who would rather not bring in Brand-Names, where would you draw the line? Yeah, sticky-tape is a good alternative, but would you really keep refering to velcro as 'hook and loop fastener' the entire time?
Just a thought.

BIG WORD *spazflaildie* I generally don't like generonyms in general (pun unintentional), although I find I'm guilty of it with velcro a lot, just because I can never remember the actual term for it. But I HATE it when people call all containers "Tupperware" or all sodas "Coke." It drives me nuts. (You get a pass, though, Woodster, for calling it "tupperware" with a lowercase T. XD)

I try to avoid use of Generonyms. I use "bandage" instead of Band-Aid, and I don't think I've ever needed to write 'Velcro' so I haven't had to come up with a substitute for it. Recently, I wanted to use something akin to superglue, but even "superglue" seemed too--Earth-oriented? So I came up with something else. There are just certain things that really throw me off if I'm reading them. Reading "Band-Aid" would totally pull me out of the story.

For me, it really depends on the fic. If the fic is humor or parody, I think you can get away with product placement a little bit. Though, I'll agree with Tasha that actual restaurant names or the like should still be avoided. That won't stop me from thinking of Gaian alternatives, of course. However, if it's meant to be serious or dramatic, the Earth-references won't flow with what's going on. It will jolt you write out of the story.
