I think, in addition to giving us the option of rewording our own posts rather than coming onto the board to see them chopped for us, it is important that we also have some recourse when we feel we are being asked to edit ourselves unjustly. Because I maintain that much of the moderating here is unnecessary, and that it is ridiculous to force a person to take back a post just because some thin-skinned hypocrite cried to the mods. It is not okay for such a person so be thoroughly offensive and disrespectful of other people himself, without punishment, and then be granted the mods' full sympathetic ear the moment someone tells him so. And I do not see why, in such a situation, I should have to limit myself to communicating via PM when it is relevant to the public discussion. Like now. I could be having this debate in private with the mods/admin, but then the other people who feel the same way would not be aware that the discussion -- relevant to them -- is taking place and would not be able to participate. Sometimes unpleasant conversations need to take place in the open. And people should have the right to say what they need to say, even if someone else doesn't care for their tone, without fear of moderation.
So, my point: How is policy going to ensure that we have a fair process by which to dispute the decision, when we are told to change a post?

FIRST. Suggestion: Let's bring the Dark Army back! =D Personally, I loved that. When Tasha suggested I join, I was usually in summer school for about four hours a day, so coming home to find such great people really made my day. I felt really welcome and kind of mushy and sappy. It was great.
O-k. I do find it a little unfair to look to the moderators for the fix. We have to remember why we're here: we all love writing and reading FFVII fanfiction! We don't have to be here; we're here because we want to be. I'm here every day because I fell in love with you all (feel special). We all care, right? That being said, the moderators are here because they care, too, and they want to do a good job keeping this place afloat. Again, instead of looking for a magical solution from just them, how about we all start brainstorming and see what we come up with?
And I very much like how Yaccy has subtly been trying to shift the focus of the discussion from the problem - a lot of the same things are being reiterated, I've noticed - to the solution.
Vulcan, Kas and Ren (among others, like Mengde and whatnot): you guys have really well thought-out opinions on the things in the system that need tweaking. I can't follow a debate worth beans, but I think that you all really know what needs fixing because you've been there, and you know what it's like. If anything, I think you guys can probably figure out some really good ideas to get the boards running better.

La's right. I've been thinking and I realised that yeah, we all have our own issues with how things are, some more than others, but I think we're forgetting something.
We all had different reasons for joining the forum, but one thing I think we all have in common is that we have fun here. I remember when I joined, I really felt like I could fit in here and speak my mind about anything and someone would listen to me. Things were relaxed and we were all friends. Now, all we seem to do is b'tch and moan about things that aren't how we want them to be and we're suddenly just 'other members' to each other and it's putting everyone on edge.
Sure, we need to iron out the wrinkles, but surely we can focus on finding the solution instead of constantly blaming everyone else for the problem.

*feels special*
La has said it more eloquently than I ever could have - the reason this topic even exists is because we all love this forum to death. I really want to second what La said about how it's not fair on the mods to expect them to come up with some magical solution that will cure AIDS and stop football fan fights.
This forum is overflowing with smartness (case in point, right there). Let's put it to use, and come up with a solution together (like Voltron. Form feet and legs! Form arms and - I'm sorry, couldn't help myself).

Enough is enough when a mods are attempting to leave. This sounds strange coming from me, but everyone stop. We need to stop fighting, mods need to stop pouncing on every little slightly conversational post. We all had fun when we joined; can't we all at least go back to the way it was when we joined. More new members would help, and real new members who will contribute to numerable threads here and breathe some new life back into the forum. I don't want to see anyone leave.

We need to encourage the newbies to use the intro threads so we can welcome them properly and make sure they feel that they can post in the Bar and the Wine Cellar. We need to turn this into a community again instead of just a forum.

Leaf said she wants you all to know that this crisis is because she left.
Get her back, and the problem is solved.
I want someone provocative and talkative but it's so hard when you're shallow as a shower says: mmm? I want someone provocative and talkative but it's so hard when you're shallow as a shower says: tell everyone its all cos i left

As much as I loved Leaf on this thing, getting one member back is not gonna solve all our problems; but Mint's idea could. ;D

I think I mentioned this, but maybe if the mods reformatted the registration page - if they can? Where it says the rules, I noticed that it's mainly just in paragraph form. I think maybe if it were changed to bullet format with a clearly indicated bit saying that you have to be respectful of other people's opinions - this is pretty much where everything started, yunno? - to join, people would know that this isn't a kind of board to hit people upside the head with trouts and disregard 'em to boot. So that they'd know what they're getting into: a place for cool discussions without being like FDAIPOFPJIDO RAWR like all those other places.

But simply shortening a rule will not make it obeyed. The way I see it, there's two choices: 1) We all chill out. Things will get casual, and everyone will let it sort itself out. Mods chill. Posters chill. Just let arguments fight themselves out. It's human nature. We're not meant to be civil all the time. There will be a period of anarachy, but it'll settle. 2) We all tighten up. Mods get stricter, rules get stricter and become cool little bullet points, and everyone talks like robots. Offenders are banned. Then shot. Believe it or not, I admin another board with Clan. When things get rowdy, we just random ban people. It's archaic, and despot-like, but when the person comes back, they laugh about it. THEY DON'T TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. WE ARE ALL TOO SERIOUS. CHILL OUT.

Maybe a community that focuses more on respect than civility? Ya know, the golden rule, and all that - do unto other as you would have them do unto you.
Example:
Person A: Makes a pleasant and decent argument regarding "sea-kittens" vs "fish", with more support for the fish side but some points admitting to the benefits of sea-kittens.
Person B: Completely ignores anything Person A says and continued to emphatically state that sea-kittens are the only real canon and anyone who doesn't think so is an idiot.
Person A: Calls Person B arrogant and tells them to get their head out of dark and unpleasant places.
Following the 'respect' thing, Person B would get the warning, and Person A would be perfectly in the right. Now I'm not saying that Person A now has the excuse to fly completely off the handle, and their response should be limited to one post, so as not to drag it into a flame war.
...Does this make any sense at all?

Bring back the Dark Army.
Back off a little with the Moderating for the time being, if the place picks up and things start getting carried away then step in and reign it in.
While I understand the use of the swear filter, it does my nut in. And it doesn't even make that much of change, there are ways around it, so we're still capable of saying it.
Stop with the forced civility, it means so much more and comes across as meaningful when we're being civil because we want to and not because it is due to the modding.
Stop with the harsh modding in regards to posts, allow us to say what we want to say, even if it's blunt. If we're allowed to do so, then we may not actually have to do so. Right now, we only say the harsh truth, sometimes in an extremely blunt way, when our tempers have reached their limits. If we are not forced to repress our true opinions so often, then there will not be so many out-burts.
This Community needs promotion if we people want it to return to how it was. Banners, posts/adds on other sites, I know a few with threads specifically for advertising other sites. The Dark Army should be re-introduced, it welcomed new members and made them feel welcome, being included in a running-gag within an already existing community.
All staff members, mods and admin, need to step back a little. The majority of the staff members, though not all, are coming across as possessing large egos and being on power trips. This may not be the case in others' opinions, but it is in mine.

I cannot believe I am saying this, but I agree with Pirates. We are taking this entirely too seriously - it's a forum on the internet. Obviously, it's a forum we all care about immensely, but it's the internet, not SRS BIZNIZ.
I don't want anyone leaving over this thread - on EITHER side. I think that we, as semi-adults, should all be able to calm down and bite the bullet when we're criticized. If you can't, I'm sorry, but you don't belong on the internet.
Both sides have valid points and wrongs that have been done. If we can all accept that at face value, and still smile and interact with everyone, we can come to a solution.
Please?

Yes. If people leave, isn't that just giving the impression that this can never work and we should all just give up? Lighten up and have fun, like we did before. Hiccups and all if need be.
