 Nominations FAQ
« Thread Started on Jun 25, 2008, 1:49pm »

Got any questions about the nominations process? Ask them here.

Can I nominate my own fic?

Yes, you can. We trust that authors will exercise this right sensibly - please only nominate yourself if you really feel that your fic has been overlooked and it deserves to be up for an award. Remember that we reserve the right to delete nominations if we think they are substandard.

Can my fic still take part in the award if I'm a judge? Can judges nominate their own fics?

Yes, and yes. Judges will not be allowed to judge any categories in which their own fic has been nominated.

Can I nominate an R/NC-17 rated fic?

Yes, but please make the fic's rating clear so that people know what they are clicking on.

What is a drabble?

For the purposes of these awards, a drabble is defined as any single chapter fic under 1000 words. All fics which fall under this definition may only be nominated in the Drabble category, not any others.

Can I nominate a collection of short stories or drabbles?

No, please select one short story or drabble in the collection to nominate. If you really think more than one fic in the collection deserves nomination, please nominate them separately.

Can I nominate a series of fics?

No, not as a single nomination. Please select one fic in the series to nominate. If you really think more than one fic in the series deserves nomination, please nominate them separately.

I want to nominate this WiP, but it hasn't been updated for ages...

Please do not nominate abandoned fics. WiPs must have been updated at least ten months before the last day of nominations - that is, on or after 1st March, 2008.

I want to nominate this WiP, but it only has one chapter right now...

You may not nominate WiPs which are under five chapters long, in any category. If the fic you wish to nominate is updated to five chapters before the end of the nominations period, you can go ahead and nominate it.

What happens after the nominations have closed?

The judges will read through the nominations and select a shortlist of the best in each category. Three or four fics will make the shortlist. After that, the judges will choose a winner in each category from the shortlists.

When are the shortlists going to be announced?

We expect the shortlists to be announced on 15th March 2009.

When are the winners going to be announced?

We expect the winners to be announced on 15th May 2009.

Two questions from me:

Let's say that a catagory fills up, you lock it, and before the end of the nomination time the GG get rid of two of the stories. Would you open the catagory again for nomination, even if it is only those two spots?

My next one is this: let's say that a judge really wants a specific catagory but his/her story is nominated (which would stop them from doing it). Is it possible for the judge to move the story to maybe a different category (From Romance to maybe Completed or One-Shot, etc)? Or would the judge have to pull their story out of the race completely?

That won't happen, because preliminary reading won't work like that. Preliminary readers will check a fic before it is added to the nominations list. Once it has been added, it has a guaranteed spot, unless it gets removed for some other reason e.g. the author deleted it.

If a judge really wanted to judge one particular category, then they could request that their nominated fic be moved, yes, but I can't guarantee that the request will be granted or that any judge will end up with the categories of their choice.

I feel it ought to be mentioned that the official nominations list is in the top post that Pied used to start the thread - she will update it as nominations approvals come in (I assume). Just because someone has posted a nomination in that thread does not mean it is official, not until the approval has come in (there has been some confusion that people have asked me about, and I felt the need to clarify that).

So, a fic is not an official nominee until it is posted in the first post starting that genre's nominations. Just because someone has posted it in the nominations thread does not mean it is a nominee. See what I mean? XD

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I'm fairly certain this is what Pied means.

(Yes, this is correct. Thanks for clarifying. - Pied)

May I ask a question?

Well, I'll ask it either way.

If an author's work already been nominated for a certain category (eg. Best Het Romance), is it possible to nominate another of the author's work for the same category if they were to write another fic of the same/superior standard?

Hi! I have a quick question and hope this is the right place to ask it. I want to nominate a fic that is a work in progress. It's exceptionally good, and I really think it deserves some recognition. I know that the rule is that the fic must be at least five chapters, but I was wondering if word count might count for something? This fic is only four chapters, but it's just under 19,000 words long and is very well developed so far, and longer than a lot of fics of five or more chapters that I know of. I would love to nominate it, so I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. :]

Thanks!

Hmm, well, that depends. 19,000 words is a fairly decent length, so we might be able to make an exception for a great fic. Remember that it also needs to have been updated since February. Go ahead and nominate it, and we'll see what we think. :)

Go to the nominations board here, click on the category you want to nominate a fic in, and reply to the thread, filling out the form at the top.
